How the guides are written, and why nothing is ranked

Every guide is a decision framework: the questions, requirements and cost components that separate one product from another for your situation. None of them tells you which product to buy, and none will until a scoring rubric is approved and published in full on this page.

What a guide contains

Each of the 13 guides follows one structure, in one order: who needs this software and when; a requirements checklist split into must-haves and items that depend on your situation; a decision table (if your situation is this, look for that); the components of total cost, as things to ask about rather than prices; implementation phases; questions to ask in a demo; red flags in a contract; and the vendors, alphabetically. Advice in a guide is general guidance written by us. Where a guide states a rule (a tax record-keeping period, an auditing report, a payment system), it cites the regulator or standard setter, and the citation is numbered beside the sentence.

Why there are no rankings, scores or picks

The right product depends on your ledger, your volume, your controls and your team. A ranking cannot know those, and a score invites the reader to skip the questions that matter. So the site publishes no ranking, score, star rating, “pick”, award or review, and no customer endorsements. The site's name is a name, not a claim. If a scored rubric is ever introduced, it will appear here in full first, with the owner's approval and a date.

How vendors are included

A vendor is included in a guide when its own site offers a product for that job. Inclusion is not a recommendation, and leaving a vendor out is not a judgement: the 89 vendors here are the ones whose pages we could read. No vendor can pay to be listed, ordered or described, and there are no affiliate links or sponsored placements. Listing order is alphabetical everywhere.

Every vendor gets the same fields: how it describes itself, quoted word for word in 40 words or fewer, with the page and the date we read it; what its site lists as included; its pricing, only if its own pricing page states it, quoted with the date, otherwise marked as not published; the integrations it names on its own pages; and whether it appears in the SEC's list of companies with tickers, with its EDGAR link. Our own description of each vendor is at most two neutral sentences, drawn from the same pages. Marketing claims are not repeated: where a vendor's headline makes a superlative claim, we quote a different sentence.

On the first read, these vendors' pages did not return readable content to our request, or their robots.txt asked automated readers to stay away, so they are left out until a later read succeeds: Anrok, CCH Tagetik (Wolters Kluwer), Coupa, Drivetrain, Embat, Gusto, Ivalua, JAGGAER, Kyriba, NetSuite, Oracle, Paylocity, Prophix, Sage, SAP (robots.txt disallows all crawlers), Workiva.

How pages are read and checked

Vendor pages are fetched one request at a time, at least a second apart per site, with a named user agent, and robots.txt is respected. Every quoted sentence, listed module, named integration and pricing line was checked by script against the page it cites before publication. A daily job re-reads a rotating slice of vendor and pricing pages, and when a quoted line no longer appears it opens a change for a person to review; nothing on a vendor page changes without that review.

Before anything publishes, an automated gate checks every page for superlatives, ratings, testimonials, em dashes and missing sources, checks that each vendor fact cites the vendor's own domain or a regulator, and checks that the date a page was first published is never moved. The 44 side-by-side tables are limited to vendors that appear together in a guide, and they show the same fields for both, never a verdict.

Dates

Each page shows the day it was first published here, set once by the build and never moved backwards. Vendor facts show the day we read them. Prices change; check the vendor's page on the day you decide.

Corrections

Write to corrections@bestfinancesoftware.com with the page and the fact. Vendors are welcome to point out an error in their own record; the correction is made from their public pages, not from a private description. Corrections are made on the page with a dated note.
