Treasury software should show every bank balance by nine in the morning, then help you move money with controls
Treasury tools live or die on bank connectivity. Ask for each of your banks by name, the connection method and who maintains it.
Published 29 October 2026; vendor pages read 29 October 2026.
Choose treasury management software by how completely and reliably it connects to your banks, because cash visibility, forecasting and payments all depend on that data. After connectivity, compare how each product builds the daily cash position, forecasts by entity and currency, and controls who can release a payment.
This guide is for treasurers, CFOs and finance leads managing several banks, entities or currencies. It does not rank products. The vendors are listed alphabetically below with the same facts for each, from their own pages.
Who needs this, and when
The usual triggers: a daily cash position built by logging into several bank portals, a cash forecast in a spreadsheet that nobody trusts, payments released from bank portals with inconsistent approval rules, idle cash spread across accounts, or exposure above deposit insurance limits that nobody tracks. FDIC insurance covers deposits to at least $250,000 per depositor, per ownership category at each FDIC-insured bank 4, so a company with large balances usually needs a view across banks.
Smaller teams may get what they need from their ERP's cash module or a spend platform's accounts. A dedicated treasury tool earns its cost when there are several banks, entities, currencies or debt and investment positions to manage.
Requirements checklist
Treasury: requirements
Must have: every product on your shortlist should do it. Depends on you: test it if your situation calls for it.
Must have
- Connections to every bank you use, named in the order form, with the method (API, SWIFT, host-to-host or file) for each.
- A daily cash position by bank, entity and currency, with the time of the last update.
- Payment approval rules with dual control, and a log of who created and released each payment.
- Bank account management: a register of accounts, signatories and mandates.
- Export of balances, transactions and forecasts.
Depends on you
- Cash forecasting from ERP, AP and AR data, if you forecast weekly or daily.
- Payments from the platform, if you want to stop releasing payments in bank portals.
- Investments, debt and FX exposure, if you hold them.
- Intercompany netting and in-house banking, if you run a group treasury.

If your situation is this, look for that
| If | Then |
|---|---|
| Visibility is the main problem | Start with connectivity and cash positioning; add forecasting and payments later. |
| You release many payments from bank portals | Look at payment workflows with dual control, sanctions screening 3 and bank-format files. |
| You need same-day or instant domestic payments | Ask which rails the platform supports; Fedwire is a real-time gross settlement system whose transfers are final and irrevocable once processed 1, and FedNow lets businesses send instant payments through their depository institution accounts 2. |
| You have many entities and currencies | Ask about intercompany netting, in-house banking and FX exposure reporting. |
| Your forecast is built from AP and AR | Check the ERP connectors and how forecast categories map to your ledger. |
What it costs: the components to ask about
| Component | What to ask | Where to find it |
|---|---|---|
| Licence | Whether price is by number of banks, accounts, entities, users or modules. | Pricing page if published; otherwise the quote. |
| Connectivity | Per-bank connection fees, and bank-side fees for APIs or SWIFT. | Order form and your bank's fee schedule. |
| Implementation | Bank onboarding, ERP connectors, forecast set-up and hours included. | Statement of work. |
| Payments | Per-payment fees, if payments run through the platform. | Pricing page or order form. |
| Internal time | Weeks of treasury time to onboard banks and test formats. | Your own plan. |
| Renewal and exit | Price on adding banks or entities; export of history. | Order form and master agreement. |
Implementation timeline
- Weeks 1 to 2: inventory. Every bank, account, signatory and current payment process.
- Weeks 2 to 8: connect banks. Allow the most time here: each bank runs its own onboarding.
- Weeks 6 to 10: cash position and forecast. Map transaction categories; build the first forecast.
- Weeks 10 to 12: payments. Approval rules, test files and a small live batch.
- Quarter 2: extend. Investments, debt, netting or FX, one at a time.
Questions to ask in a demo
- For each of our banks by name: how do you connect, how often does data arrive, and who maintains it?
- Show the cash position for the previous business day, with balances that do not match a bank statement, and how that is flagged.
- Show a payment created by one user and released by another, with the log.
- How is a payee screened before release?
- Show a forecast versus actual for last month, by category.
- What leaves with us if we cancel?
Red flags in a contract
- Banks not named. If a bank connection is "available on request", it is not in scope.
- Bank-side fees ignored. Your banks may charge for API or SWIFT access; ask them before signing.
- No dual control on payment release, or a single administrator who can change approval rules alone.
- No SOC 1 report. Cash and payments data feed financial reporting 5.
- History you cannot export. Bank transaction history is evidence for reconciliations and audits.
