Consolidation software should make every elimination traceable, from entity ledger to group report

Groups outgrow consolidation spreadsheets when entities, currencies and ownership changes multiply. Test the tool on a real month of your intercompany activity.

Published 29 October 2026; vendor pages read 29 October 2026.

Choose consolidation software by how it handles the parts of group reporting that break spreadsheets: currency translation, intercompany matching and elimination, minority interests and ownership changes, and a trail from every group figure back to the entity ledger. Consolidated statements present a parent and its subsidiaries as a single economic entity 1, and the software's job is to produce them the same way every period with evidence an auditor can follow.

This guide is for group controllers and heads of reporting. It does not recommend a product. The vendors are listed alphabetically with the same facts for each, from their own pages.

Who needs this, and when

The usual triggers: more than a handful of legal entities, entities on different ERPs, more than one functional currency, acquisitions that add entities mid-year, partial ownership, or a group reporting deadline that the spreadsheet process keeps missing. Tax can be a trigger too: large groups in the EU fall under the minimum corporate taxation directive that implements Pillar 2 2, which needs entity-level data the consolidation often already holds.

If all your entities are in one ERP that consolidates natively, test that first. A separate tool earns its cost when entities sit in different systems or when the group needs more control over adjustments than the ERP gives.

Requirements checklist

Consolidation: requirements

Must have: every product on your shortlist should do it. Depends on you: test it if your situation calls for it.

Must have

  • Loads of trial balances from every entity's ledger, with mapping to a group chart of accounts.
  • Currency translation with rate tables you control, and a currency translation adjustment you can explain.
  • Intercompany matching and elimination, with a report of unmatched items by counterparty.
  • An audit trail from each consolidated figure to entity balances and adjustments.
  • Locking of closed periods, with a log of any reopening.

Depends on you

  • Ownership structures, minority interests and equity method, if you hold less than 100 percent of some entities.
  • Disclosure management and XBRL tagging, if you file with a regulator.
  • Planning and forecasting in the same product, if the same team does both.
  • Tax reporting outputs such as country-by-country data, if your group is large enough to need them.

Implementation timeline

  1. Weeks 1 to 3: design. Group chart of accounts, entity list, ownership, currencies and reporting packs.
  2. Weeks 3 to 8: build. Mappings, rates, elimination rules and reports.
  3. Weeks 8 to 12: load history. At least the prior year's closes, reconciled to the published or reported figures.
  4. One quarter: run in parallel. Consolidate in both the old and new process and explain every difference.
  5. Next quarter: switch. Retire the spreadsheet; add disclosure or planning modules later.

Questions to ask in a demo

  • Load two of our entities in different currencies and show the translated, consolidated balance sheet.
  • Show an intercompany mismatch and how each counterparty sees and resolves it.
  • Trace one consolidated revenue figure back to the entity ledgers and every adjustment.
  • Add an acquired entity halfway through a period. What changes?
  • How are rate tables loaded and who can change them?
  • What leaves with us if we cancel: rules, mappings and history, or data only?

Back to contents

Red flags in a contract

  • Per-entity pricing with no table. Get the price for the next ten entities written down.
  • No controls report. Group figures feed financial reporting; ask for a SOC 1 report, which covers controls likely to be relevant to user entities' internal control over financial reporting 4.
  • Rules locked in. If elimination and mapping rules cannot be exported, the next migration starts from zero.
  • Connector maintenance excluded. When an entity's ERP changes, someone has to rebuild the load.
  • Implementation without a parallel run. Do not accept a plan that goes live without reconciling a full period.
